What is the cheapest espresso machine that makes great coffee?

Without a doubt, coffee is a beverage that's loved by majority of Malaysians. If you are a coffee lover, you'd want easy access to great coffee ANYTIME! But the sad fact is that you are not all the time close to the many kopitiams and coffee chains available in Malaysia. But what if you want to kick back at home or at the office and have a great cup of coffee? Do you have other alternative besides reaching for a quick fix in that 3-in-1?

Yes, you do! In fact, you'll be happy to hear that the cheapest entry level espresso machine (and one that gives you true 9 bar of pressure) will not cost you an arm and a leg in. It costs less than RM1000!  This economical espresso machine is called the mypressi TWIST. The added bonus is that it is portable and you can use it at home in the morning, bring it to work for coffee in the afternoon and bring it back for your evening shot...even bring it for picnics or 'balik kampong' trips!

The portability is a result of it not having a boiler. However, it is not a flimsy plasticky product. Many customers were surprised at how heavy the mypressi TWIST is. Yes, it is heavy due to the bulk of metal parts needed to retain heat.

So, how does it work?  Here's how:

Power Up

Insert  a  recyclable 8gm  gas cartridge–commonly used for whipped  cream or  soda water - into  the  TWIST  handle  to  pressurize.  The  cartridge  provides  the  nine  bars  of  pressure required for an ideal espresso extraction; a single cartridge will make up to eight shots.

Pick Your Grind of Choice
Fill the mypressi TWIST basket with fresh ground coffee or an ESE pod using the optional adaptor and place the water container on top. You’re now only a few moments away from enjoying a perfectly prepared espresso.

Just Add Water
Add hot water from any convenient source. No need to measure; simply fill the water to the marked fill line for both single and double shots.

Seal and Go
Place  the  top  seal  onto  the  water  container  and  turn  to  lock  down.  The  air-tight  seal prevents any leaks. You are now ready to TWIST.

Off Like a Shot
Hold  the  TWIST  in place  over  one  or  two  cups  and pull  the  trigger.  Watch  as  the  TWIST produces delicious espresso with perfect crema. Achieving the perfect perk took less than 30 seconds.

Enjoy
Take  a  moment to  appreciate the  flawlessly brewed,  delightfully aromatic  espresso before you.  Add  hot  frothed  milk  for  a  latte  or  sprinkle  with  cinnamon  or  chocolate  for  a  perfect cappuccino.  Add  hot  water  to  your  espresso  for  a  full Americano, or  make  your  espresso directly over other drinks or desserts. Welcome to espresso heaven.

This is definitely the cheapest espresso maker that produces espresso quality similar to espresso machines costing up to 10 times more.

We all love feedback and testimonials. Here's one from a recent customer:

"I just had the most satisfying double shot espresso at home ever, thanks to your recommendation regarding the Mypressi Twist and the awesome coffee beans. I will definitely recommend my friends and family to your shop and if (or rather when) I purchase a coffee machine, it would definitely be from Cuppa.

Anyhow, I've attached a photo I took of the first naked double shot I pulled using my brand new Mypressi. To me, it's as close to espresso nirvana as I can hope. I mean, just look at that crema. A thing of beauty!!! And yes, it does taste as good as it looks."

  1. At about RM700 and with added advantage of portability, the TWIST is a good value proposition. You would need to add in the cost of the gas cartridges though (not sure how much these cost or where they can be re-filled here in Malaysia).

I have a Philips Saeco HD8325 which I got locally for about RM800. It makes a decent espresso with 15 bar pressure and has a decent steamer / frother wand. I thinks it's a well built machine and value for money.
